Directed by Ron Howard, the 1985 movie “Cocoon” was filmed in the St. Petersburg area. The film features Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley, and Hume Cronyn as trespassing seniors in a Florida retirement community who find themselves brimming with youthful vigor after swimming in a pool containing mysterious objects. “Cocoon” won two Academy Awards – Best Supporting Actor (Don Ameche) and Best Visual Effects.
