Overview:

The Orange County Regional History Center is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Museum Registrar – Archivist. The History Center is a national multi-award-winning, AAM accredited, and Smithsonian affiliated institution centered around its mission: to serve as the gateway for community engagement, education, and inspiration by preserving and sharing Central Florida’s continually unfolding story.

This position is responsible for the daily management and care of museum archival collection including storage, preservation, exhibition, and research, the acquisition, accession, and deaccession of all archival items, and collaborates with other members of the History Center’s staff in developing exhibits and other research related tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of the Curator of Collections.

Reports to:  Curator of Collections

Representative Duties

  • Process archival collections, including institutional archives and museum records, to professional standards.
  • Assists the Curator of Collections in managing the archival collection of the museum.
  • Performs specialized procedures in archive handling, management, storage, preservation and exhibition.
  • Obtains, develops, organizes, and catalogs new collections of individual archives to enhance and improve existing inventories.
  • Maintain and improve archives directory in Proficio database including the user interface.
  • Preserve and monitor archival collections through environmental controls and appropriate housing. Manage the relocation of archival collections storage onsite and offsite as needed.
  • Identifies, researches, and prepares archival collection items for exhibit displays.
  • Maintains records of and prioritizes processing backlog.
  • Responds to all requests for archive research from public and private interests.
  • Coordinates, trains, and supervises volunteers who work in the collections department.
  • Develops and maintains records-retention schedule for institutional archives.
  • Conducts and facilitates tours of Brechner Research Facility and archive.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in History, Public History, Museum Studies, Library Sciences, Anthropology or a closely related field and two years of experience working in a museum, archive, library, or closely related field which includes artifact and/or archive care and handling.
  • Knowledge of standard archival theory and practice, preservation concepts, principles, and methodologies, local research tools and finding aids.
  • Knowledge of workflows for preservation digitization, ingest, metadata creation and quality control of images.
  • Positive attitude, good interpersonal skills, flexibility and commitment to collaboration, customer service, strategy, and innovation.
  • Current knowledge of best practices in the digitization of archival collections.

Preferences

  • M.A., M.L.I.S. or certification in Archives, Library Science, Museum Studies, or related field with formal training in archives management and preservation or commensurate experience.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Three years of archives experience preferably in a museum setting.
  • Knowledge of records management practices, including records retention and records disposal
  • Familiarity with Proficio and Preservica.
  • Experience in conservation techniques and digitization, digital preservation practices and standards

Other duties may be assigned as required to fulfill the directives of the strategic plan or the museum. Work environment is a combination of office setting with some driving between the office to the museum and off-site storage; must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

*Final Candidates must successfully pass a background screening and fingerprinting, must be able to live and work in the United States, and will be required to pass a drug test. Interview and relocation expenses are not offered.

Additional Information:

Hours Per Week: 40 Hours, exempt

Schedule: Generally, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday, some evenings and weekends may be required.

Primary Work Location:  Orange County Regional History Center, 65 E. Central Blvd., Orlando, FL 32801 with significant portions of time spent at the offsite facility located approximately 30 minutes from the museum.

Salary: $24.27 – $27.91
