Lunch & Learn – Florida: A History in Pictures

Friday, May 5, 2023, noon – 1 p.m.

Beginning with a long-running, popular social media presence, Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies have created a book that offers a photographic account of the Sunshine State through more than 130 images ― many of them published for the first time. From the stone fort at St. Augustine to the Everglades (or “The Big Swamp” as it was called early in the 20th century) to Bok Tower Gardens, and much more, Florida: A History in Pictures offers a stunning portrait of our state. Hear how the McGinness and Davies tracked down these rare photos and discovered the stories behind the pictures.

Born in Orlando and raised in Altamonte Springs and Tampa, Mike McGinness has a passion for studying history, the great outdoors, bass fishing, music, and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He works in Data Center Operations for AdventHealth in Altamonte Springs and has been with the same company for 38 years.

Jeff Davies came to Miami Beach via Brooklyn, New York, when he was just 5 years old. He’s always been interested in the history behind old pictures and became known as the family historian. He eventually became the third generation in his family in the audio-video electronics business and continues in this profession today. Jeff lives in Boca Raton, Florida.
